About Ethan Torgrimson

I'm Ethan Torgrimson, and I work with people who want honest answers about life insurance. Most of my clients are veterans, military families, seniors planning ahead, and professionals protecting what they've built. I explain what different policies actually do, then help you pick one that makes sense.

I don't work for one company. I compare options so you can see the differences in cost, coverage, and how policies work over time. Some people need simple term coverage. Others want permanent policies with cash value or living benefits. My job is to explain the tradeoffs clearly.

If you're not sure what you need yet, that's fine. We can start with a conversation about your situation and go from there. No pressure, just information.

How I work

My approach with clients

I start by asking what you're trying to protect: income for your family, a mortgage, business interests, or final expenses. Then I explain which types of coverage handle those needs and what the real differences are between policies.

I compare options from multiple insurers so you can see pricing, underwriting requirements, and policy features side by side. Some companies are better for certain health conditions or age ranges. My job is to find the ones that work best for your situation.

Once you pick a policy, I handle the application and stay in touch as your needs change. If you have questions later or want to adjust coverage, just call me.

Life Insurance

Term, Whole, and Universal Life Insurance

Term life covers you for a set period and costs less because it expires. Whole life covers you for life, builds cash value, and has fixed premiums. Universal life also lasts for life but has flexible premiums and cash value tied to interest rates. Whole life is predictable. Universal life gives you control but requires attention. Term is simpler and cheaper if you only need coverage for a specific window, like while your kids are young or your mortgage is outstanding.

Life Insurance

No-Exam and Simplified-Issue Life Insurance

Simplified-issue policies ask health questions but skip the medical exam, so you can get approved in minutes instead of weeks. Guaranteed-issue policies accept everyone with no health questions, though they often limit payouts in the first two years. Both cost more than fully underwritten policies because insurers take on more risk. These options work well if you have diabetes, heart issues, or other conditions that make traditional underwriting difficult.

Life Insurance

Business Life Insurance (Key Person and Buy-Sell)

Key person insurance protects a business if a critical employee or owner dies. The company owns the policy and receives the death benefit to cover lost revenue or recruitment costs. Buy-sell policies fund agreements between business partners so one can buy out the other's share if someone passes away. Both use permanent or term life depending on how long the arrangement needs to last. The structure and ownership matter for taxes, so I usually recommend coordinating with your accountant.

Mortgage Protection

Mortgage Protection Life Insurance Options

Most mortgage protection uses term life that matches your loan length (15 or 30 years). Decreasing-term policies lower the death benefit over time as your mortgage balance drops, which can save on premiums. Permanent life or return-of-premium term cost more but don't expire. Living benefit riders let you access the death benefit early if you're diagnosed with a critical illness or become disabled. The right fit depends on whether you want pure mortgage coverage or broader protection.

Straight answers

Common questions

What's the difference between term life and whole life?

Term life covers you for a specific period (10, 20, or 30 years) and costs less because it expires. Whole life covers you for your entire life, builds cash value you can access, and has fixed premiums. Term works well if you need temporary coverage. Whole life makes sense if you want permanent protection or a savings component.

Can I get life insurance without a medical exam?

Yes. Simplified-issue policies use health questions instead of an exam, and guaranteed-issue policies approve everyone regardless of health (though coverage may be limited in the first two years). These options cost more than fully underwritten policies, but they're faster and work well if you have serious health conditions.

How much final expense insurance do I need?

Most people choose $10,000 to $25,000 to cover funeral, burial, and immediate bills. The average funeral costs around $7,000 to $10,000, but you may want extra for medical expenses or outstanding debts. We can look at your situation and pick an amount that covers what matters to you.

Does mortgage protection insurance pay the lender directly?

Not usually. Most mortgage protection is regular life insurance, so the death benefit goes to your beneficiary (often your spouse or family). They can use it to pay off the mortgage or for anything else. That's different from mortgage insurance required by lenders, which only protects the bank.

What happens to the cash value in a permanent life policy?

Cash value grows over time inside whole life or universal life policies. You can borrow against it, withdraw it, or let it grow. If you pass away, the death benefit goes to your beneficiaries (the cash value usually stays with the insurer unless you have a rider that adds it). Cash value grows slowly at first and builds faster later.

Can veterans get better rates on life insurance?

Not automatically. Rates depend on your age, health, and coverage amount, not military service. However, VA life insurance programs like VGLI and SGLI offer group coverage that can be affordable, and some private insurers understand deployment histories or service-related health issues better than others. I can compare both routes.
